Georgian crime gang members arrested for stealing phones, over NIS 1m.
The arrests followed an undercover operation by the Central District’s Central Unit, targeting theft, receiving stolen goods, and conspiracy.
Six members of a Georgian crime gang were arrested by Central District detectives after allegedly targeting more than 100 elderly victims across Israel. The suspects are accused of stealing wallets and phones from victims and withdrawing over 1.5 million NIS from their bank accounts, according to Israel Police.
The arrests followed an undercover operation by the Central District’s Central Unit, which spanned multiple districts and several weeks, targeting theft, receiving stolen goods, and conspiracy.
The investigation revealed a criminal network led by six Georgian nationals, targeting elderly victims, aged 70 to 90, across the country.
More than 100 cases were linked to this gang, with complaints coming from regions including Sheflera, Gush Dan, Ashdod, and Haifa. The investigation involved cooperation with several professional organizations, including security officers from credit companies, banks, and public transportation.
During the investigation, detectives uncovered a consistent criminal pattern. Members of the gang, often in their 30s, would surround elderly victims on public buses, trapping them in a “sandwich” formation to prevent escape.

While one gang member distracted the victim, another would steal their wallet and phone. The stolen items were then used to withdraw large amounts of money from the victims’ bank accounts, totaling over 1.5 million NIS.
Suspects arrested and evidence seized
On Monday morning, after moving the investigation to its open phase, detectives from the Central and Southern Districts arrested the suspects, all of whom live in those areas.
During the arrest, the police seized various relevant pieces of evidence. The suspects are scheduled for a court hearing, where police will request an extension of their detention.
Central District Commander Maj.-Gen. Yair Hetzroni praised the Central District unit for their quick response in the case, highlighting the importance of protecting vulnerable citizens. He also emphasized the fast investigative process that led to the gang’s arrest and urged the police to pursue the case to the maximum extent.
